  • meets my goal — can show file sizes in bytes
  • works in win10
  • 😦 too many unwanted columns. I was able to move the unwanted columns to far right and “save column order”. I can hide these columns but not saved.
  • 😦 too many unwanted menu buttons — not configurable
  • 🙂 i managed to hide the unwanted search box and summary pane

Many years ago (early 2000’s?) I heard on BBC that for most adults except the underweight, reducing daily intake to 1/3 (i.e. by 66%) can be beneficial.

BBC Crowd science 26 May 2018 — many scientists showcasing health benefits of fasting:

  • skipping breakfast is the easiest fast, not totally bad or dangerous. Can be beneficial. https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/the-5-2-diet-guide has many followers including health scientists
  • skipping lunch is also common. I tried this for 2+ years in OCBC and Macquarie
  • One brain scientist (Mark… U.S. National Institute of Aging) skips both breakfast and lunch for many years (35 years skipping breakfast, and 5Y skipping lunch with 16H daily fast)
    • can improve brain performance for some people, as he experienced himself
  • A German fasting clinic puts guests on “extreme” multi-day (up to 3 weeks or longer) fast at 200 calories/day, but under strict medical supervision
    • instead of external food, consume internal food i.e. the fat reserve. Human body is not meant to be fed continuously; once a while we had better use up the reserve.
  • Refeeding at end of a fast can be restorative and beneficial if carefully managed. In a wood train, old furniture gets burned and at the refeeding station new furniture gets rebuilt. Need 3 days fasting to get into starvation mode
  • ketone — minimum 12H fasting to induce internal fat-burning, and ketone production with multiple benefits esp. on brain. Ketone also suppresses appetite.
  • A microbe professor skips a breakfast once a week to give his microbes a “big break”
    • “lawn mowing” microbes eat away bad linings in the guts during a fast. Cleans up and improves the guts.
  • The 5-2 fasting program is designed to address cancer, in addition to diabetes.

–work hours:

I want to work slightly longer hours and show more sacrifice and more output than in NY.

When in the mood at 7am SGT, I feel I should keep going.

–sleep:

first work day of each week — need to sleep at least 4H in afternoon till 6.30pm when kids come home and starts shouting.

Other work days, I had better sleep in the afternoon till 6 when both kids come home.

Until I finish my 7 days, let’s keep to NY sleeping pattern with plenty of quiet night time at home. No need to send boy to school in the morning.

U.S. community colleges: a graduate’s personal reflection

  • For a private college, “loan application I’d submitted in order to pay the college’s pricey tuition had been rejected because of my family’s financial background” — the more you earn the harder it is to get a loan
  • full-tuition scholarship is more possible at community colleges
  • The realization that I could be challenged academically and have the opportunity to take courses I truly enjoyed without having to carry the burden of hefty tuition was freeing. For the first time in months, I felt genuine excitement, pride and, mostly, relief.
  • In contrast, ivy colleges are all private and expensive ($50-60k/Y), mostly for the affluent families
  • “enrolled in courses I was genuinely looking forward to taking”
  • The community college “also helped me become more prepared to transfer by giving me access to resources about financial aid, loans, and scholarships. I would not have those resources or opportunities if I hadn’t gone to the community college.”

sunshine on boy #grandpa

grandpa has plenty of confidence, patience … for boy. When I hear grandpa talking about his observations of boy, I wish he could live till boy graduates from college.

I feel sunshine is related to Buddhist principles.

Sunshine doesn’t mean “loose”. Sunshine works well with “logical consequence” methodology.

Sunshine on myriads of individual plants…. Sunshine as a personal metaphor means unconditional … abundance, consistence …

crunch time is NY-bound flight.

If I finish work Sat 15 Jun morning 5am, reunion, sleep 10.30 till afternoon, and need to pack up, and fly on Sat night, I probably end up with a very busy Saturday. Family is also stressed up after the trip and needs to wind down.

Half-day is a practical and nice compromise like 11am – 4pm.

I have booked a return flight with eastward layover in Beijing for 17 hours so I could get enough rest. I’m also lucky that Beijing -> NY is relatively short.

train kids to set weekly goals for themselves

Based on a book by some “expert teacher”..

It can be too hard to target “score A on this subject”. Instead, it is neither too hard nor too easy to target “complete homework on time”.

More importantly, the goal should be from the student, not imposed by an adult.

How about a target like “complete X practice problems every day”? None of these goals is easy for a kid not motivated. I just hope with parents guidance they can accept the weekly goals.
